National Occupational Standards for Grip (incorporating Crane Technician)
National Occupational Standards (Standards) provide a clear, up to date description of what an individual needs to be able do in order to perform a job successfully. They consist of a detailed breakdown of the tasks, knowledge and skills needed for effective performance within a job role, including any statutory or legal responsibilities. The Standards have been developed over a number of years by both people who work in the industry and experts from each occupational area through a process of investigation, analysis and consultation with a wide range of people.
You may wish to download the entire suite of Standards, but it is also possible to download individual units. The units are listed below in production process order.
Background
A Grips' responsibility is to build and maintain all the equipment that supports cameras. This equipment, which includes tripods, dollies, tracks, jibs, cranes, and static rigs, is constructed of delicate yet heavy duty parts requiring a high level of expertise to operate and move. Grips assemble highly complex, extremely expensive, heavy-duty equipment according to meticulous specifications and push, pull, mount or hang it from a variety of settings. The equipment can be as basic as a tripod standing on a studio floor, to hazardous operations such as mounting a camera on a 100 ft crane, or hanging it from a helicopter swooping above a mountain range.
