Freelancers: How can Standards help you?
As a freelancer you may find that training and development can fall off your list of priorities, due to time and cost implications.
Standards can help.
They provide you with a way to:
- measure your own performance;
- manage your own continuous professional development;
- audit your skills with a creativity checklist.
In short, Standards can help make sure your skills align with those of any prospective employers.
Skillset has developed a tool to help you examine your existing experience against the skills you will need in the future. This checklist is based on the Manage and Market Yourself as a Freelancer Standard.

Once you have identified any gaps in your knowledge have a look at the careers pages of the Skillset site. You will find recommendations, information about marketing and business management, as well as a free telephone helpline, should you want to speak to someone about your training needs further.
Training and development could take the form of job shadowing, a secondment, volunteering, or doing old fashioned research. However, should you identify any gaps which would require more formal training you may be eligible for funding to help alleviate the costs. Check the Funding for Individuals pages for more information.
