Using Standards to Inform Course Design and Training Provision

Standards can provide an important link between industry demand for skills, qualifications and learning programmes. Standards can be used to:

  • To inform the design of the training courses/workshops

  • To inform the delivery of the training courses/workshops

  • To identify any gaps in the training course/workshop

Mapping Existing Provision
Through mapping existing training provision to standards providers will be to identify gaps in provision, and can highlight where there is a need to update material to include new areas or to remove materials which are out of date.

- Foundation Degrees: An integral part in the design of Foundation Degrees is the process is mapping the learning outcomes to the relevant National Occupational Standards.

Mapping New Provision
Education and training providers can also use Standards to develop entirely new courses basing the syllabus on the units of competence which make up the NOS.
