Research
The up to date and reliable collection of statistics and trends is essential for our industries in order to identify their size and shape, the skills gaps and shortages, the interventions needed, and to monitor our success.
Research into our sector is also undertaken by a wide variety of agencies including the Learning and Skills Council, the Regional Development Agencies, Regional Skills Observatories, the Sector Skills Development Agency, the Office of National Statistics and academic institutions.
This research is often conducted on the basis of outdated Standard Industrial and Occupational Classifications which do not reflect our sectoral make-up. The methodologies applied are diverse, making the ability to read, analyse and compare information difficult. Sectoral sample frames and scopes are invariably different as are the definitions of what constitutes the sector.
Skillset has a well established and highly regarded research portfolio which has been developed over the last decade in conjunction with the industry.
We propose that through the Sector Skills Agreement, a common methodology and a sample frame for research in the industry should be developed with partners and that this should provide the basis for future research.
