School-based provision
The Government White Paper on 14-19 Education and Skills, published in February 2005, set out plans to reform the curriculum for 14 to 19 year olds in formal education. A central part of these reforms is the development of Diplomas for 17 ‘lines of learning', reflecting broad sectoral areas. Diplomas in the first five lines of learning were first taught in September 2008. By 2013, diplomas will be a national entitlement to every 14 to 19 year old in England.
Skillset has been the lead Sector Skills Council responsible for the development of the Diploma in Creative and Media, one of the first five lines of learning. Our principal aim has been to develop a credible and valuable alternative to current provision, encouraging aspiration, innovation and creativity within a broad and stimulating learning programme.
Skillset is also a key partner in the Media Literacy Task Force which aims to embed Media Literacy into the curriculum and promote its status as a subject. The Task Force has developed a Media Literacy Charter.
