Standards

As a Sector Skills Council, one of Skillset's main roles is to develop and maintain National Occupational Standards (NOS) for all occupations across the creative media industries. These standards define the skills, knowledge and experience required to work in broadcast, film, video, interactive media and photo imaging.

The development process involves looking at what is already in place, holding focus group meetings with industry practitioners, running workshops, interviews, sector-wide consultation and approval by our industry steering groups.

The standards provide a clear description of what you need to be able do in order to perform your job competently. They consist of a detailed breakdown of the tasks, knowledge and skills needed for effective performance within a job role, including any statutory or legal responsibilities.

Standards offer a framework for good employment practice. Skillset's own range of standards provide a framework of tried and tested good practice needed to perform different jobs effectively in the creative media industries. One can use standards to compare  performance against national benchmarks of good practice, and to be very clear about what  needs to be achieved.

Standards are outcome based - in other words they look at WHAT needs to be done, they are not prescriptive in telling you HOW to do it.
