Leitch Review of Skills
The Leitch Review of Skills (Prosperity for all in the global economy - world class skills) was published on 5 December 2006 and was warmly received by both the public and private sector. Skillset welcomes the recommendations and the review's endorsement of Sector Skills Councils and the industry-led approach to tackling skills and training issues.
This independent review, commissioned by Gordon Brown to investigate the changes necessary to meet the skills challenges of the UK economy in 2020, has already signaled a shift towards a demand-led approach to skills development across the UK. Each Nation has published a response and action plan for implementing the review and the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) has been established in order to oversee these actions.
Leitch recommended that Sector Skills Council should be reformed, re-licensed and empowered.
In May 2009, Skillset was awarded a new licence by the UK Government (and the relevant Ministers in the Devolved Administrations) following a rigorous assessment by the National Audit Office on behalf of the UKCES.
Skillset was judged to be performing to a high standard in most aspects of its work.
Case Studies
The creative media industries are in the best position to identify the current and emerging skills needs for their sectors. For this reason, Skillset has used a sector-led approach, allowing the audio visual industries to take the lead in forming tailor-made business solutions.
