Skillset Academies

After the recent deadline for Expression of Interest forms, Skillset have assessed the bids from Further and Higher Education against the criteria and standards outlined in the Skillset Academy guidelines.

A large number of bids were received with over half of them proceeding to the next stage, a more comprehensive application form. The deadline for completion of the application forms is 12 noon on 12th February 2007.

The application forms are designed to gain further information on the courses and the bids so alongside the Expression of Interest forms, Skillset's Industry approvals panel can make a decision as to whether the applicants proceed to Stage 2, the final visiting stage. Stage 2 will consist of a site visit to the institution/s and it is intended that these will take place from March-May 2007.

Skillset intend to announce the Skillset Academies in Summer 2007 - please see timetable below for full details on the application process.

By establishing Skillset Academies that cover a wide range of sectors and subjects, the industry is seeking to develop real and lasting partnerships with Further and Higher Education institutions and aims to create a network of excellence.

This initiative, underpinned by all of the research Skillset has undertaken within the industry, reflects the increasing importance of Further and Higher Education in developing our future workforce. The industry is totally reliant on new ideas, creativity and innovation and needs people with skills, talent and entrepreneurship. A genuine partnership between the institutions developing these skills and qualities and the employers and industry generally will create a powerful new network of centres of excellence, which will in turn set new standards in the design and delivery of practice based education and training.

This partnership, cemented through the network of Academies, will help nurture a more diverse workforce and provide the right mix of creative and commercial skills vital in influencing and developing tomorrow's talent in whose hands the future competitiveness of industry rests.

Please note: the deadline for applications to become a Skillset Academy has passed.
