Skillset's offer to the Television industry

Guided by the TV Skills Council and following extensive research and consultation with industry representatives, Skillset has produced a series of priorities and recommendations for our work with the sector.

These will be regularly reviewed to ensure the focus of our activity remains relevant to industry needs.

Skillset will offer:

  • authoritative research and labour market intelligence and qualitative work into barriers experienced for progression in the industry by people with disabilities and from black, Asian and minority ethinic (BAME) communities;
  • a bridge to the higher and further education sectors, including through the new Skillset Media Academy Network. This has the aim of developing high level continuous professional development and creative partnerships for innovation;
  • increasing access to high quality, diverse and industry prepared new entrants through subsidised training schemes, apprenticeships, etc;
  • opportunities to grow business through skills development via Train to Gain in England, the Training Framework in Scotland and Wales and through facilitating opportunities to bring together people and companies with TV and digital media skills;

Skillset's priorities for TV

  • developing and updating National Occupational Standards which can be a benchmark for competence in a range of jobs and help develop qualifi cations based on industry relevance and need;
  • subsidised training opportunities for the mobile and freelance workforce in industry-identified priority areas via the Skillset TV Freelance Fund. These priorities include developing skills in multiplatform content creation and higher level management skills;
  • encouraging individuals, as well as companies to invest in training;
  • developing cross-industry solutions for cross-industry issues: a focus this year on developing a passport style solution to recording competence in health and safety and editorial compliance; new approaches to skills shortages in broadcast technology; and addressing skills shortages in the archive sub-sector;
  • work with Ofcom and the Broadcast Training and Skills Regulator (BTSR) on an agreed roadmap towards a widened partnership for the promotion of training, development and equal opportunities in the broadcast industry within a refreshed coregulatory framework;
  • develop the partnership with the BBC on agreed Visual and Audio Action Plans as envisaged in the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2007.
