Who does the Television industry need?
The TV industry is highly qualified with two thirds of the workforce holding degrees.
This is a higher proportion than in the creative media industry overall, and higher than the rest of the UK workforce (currently 37% graduates).
However, routes into the industry are still fairly informal, especially in production.
Incidences of unpaid working are still common with around two fifths (38%) of the workforce having worked without pay at some point in their careers. However this is significantly lower than the corresponding figure from 2008 when 47% of the workforce reported having taken unpaid work.
There is a huge variety of job roles available in TV - in sales, finance and IT for example, not just in the more high-profile production roles. Increasingly, people with commercial skills and entrepreneurial talent are needed for a sector that must compete globally.
However, above all else television needs creative and talented people with great ideas and the talent to realise them.
