Shabazz Graham, Skillset Millennium Award Winner

Shabazz Graham - On Air Producer

Shabazz Graham

In 2004 Shabazz Graham produced a short film about a boy suffering from sickle cell who sees the face of God. He received a work placement on the set of the BBC drama series, Doctors.

Since then he has continued to work freelance on documentaries, including directing and producing a Skillset project for the Runnymede Trust entitled "This is Where I Live".

In May this year he began working at MTV Networks Europe as an On Air Producer on the network's 100th channel, MTV base Africa. This post involves producing tune in promos for the channel, editing, camera work, script writing and he has been given the opportunity to travel to Africa a number of times to produce programmes for the channel.

Shabazz said :

"this opportunity added considerably to my actual skillset and experience. I am very appreciative to Skillset for all its practical help in my career. I am positive that the help Skillset gave me to improve my showreel and CV helped in my receiving my position with MTV base Africa."

The Skillset Millennium Awards offered talented individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds the chance to gain the skills and experience they need to break into a career in the media.

Winners received a grant to complete a community based film, radio, website or print media project and up to £10,000 worth of BBC training, which included a work placement.

The awards, funded by lottery money through the Millennium Commission, were designed to improve diversity in the audio visual industries where Skillset's Employment Census shows that ethnic minorities currently make up only 7.4% of the workforce.

The awards have kick started the careers of more than 100 talented individuals between 2001 and 2004.
