Case Study

In January 2005 Screen East invested into Capriol Ltd from its RIFE funds. This investment was matched 8 times over from private equity investors.

Capriol Ltd is a privately owned company, recently incorporated, and attracted into the region – more specifically – rural North Norfolk. Anthon Britten, a theatrical producer (Music Theatre London) and composer of some celebrity in London and internationally and managing director of Capriol Ltd came to Screen East with the idea of producing 3 low-budget operatic-style features – “Peter Warlock”, “Falstaff” and “Grossmith, Gilbert & Sullivan”.

Tony was able to demonstrate earlier success with a similar product (Die Fledermaus) and had negotiated a new distribution deal with Dr. Reiner Moritz for this latest batch of films. The investment in Capriol was extremely exciting for Screen East as not only is there is strong possibility of financial return on investment but also the opportunity to involve a number of trainees in the actual productions.

Filming of “Falstaff” started in June 2005, on schedule and Screen East was able to place two production trainees and a trainee production for the whole of the shoot. In July and August the largest of three productions commenced – “Peter Warlock”. Once again Screen East was able to place 2 trainees and Ella Woolner (trainee of the first production) was employed full-time. Another trainee production team was used to shoot as the movie was made. All trainees will receive commercial credits. The trainee production teams will assist in the final edit of their material and this will form part of the commercial package. They will receive commercial credit and royalties and be allowed to use their output as part of their personal show-reels.

Ella Woolner was funded by (Screen East) bursary support in November 2004 as a runner on “Brothers of the Head”, a feature film shot partly at locations in North Norfolk. This assisted her in being placed on the Capriol productions. It was great to see Ella becoming a paid crew member on the second production.

Extracts of feedback from Richard Wood (Production trainee):

“There really is very little I can say by way of criticism for the 3-weeks I spent on this shoot. I could probably say it wasn’t the largest crew, or the highest budget – but it suited my needs perfectly and was a thoroughly enjoyable “first step” into professional film-making.

“I was able to gain experience in clapper loading; camera rigging; lenses, filters and lighting; set dressing; on set troubleshooting. All of these skills were taught 'on the fly' with thoroughness and great patience by industry professionals, and are sure to hold me in good stead in future endeavours. I’d go so far as to say, I probably learnt more in those 3 weeks than I would have in 3 months at film school.”
