Since achieving university status in 1992 the University of Derby has developed a student base of 20,000. It champions lifelong learning and access for all.

The School of Design and Media is also moving shortly to a new campus - the first Art and Design new campus in the twenty first century.
The Faculty of Arts, Design and Technology at the University of Derby applies the philosophy of creating creativity across the broad spectrum of its activities. All its subject disciplines now encompass some form of technology and will allow students to combine the creative elements of art and design with the latest specialised technology in their field.
There are three schools in the faculty.....provision is outlined below. Additionally a new Computer Games Programming degree has been developed and is on offer in the School of Computing.....details also below.

School of Design and Media:
New programmes within the School include Foundation Degrees in Commercial Video, Photography and New Media. Other relevant programmes are listed below.
Foundation Degrees Arts (FdA)
This programme is designed to enable students to gain a mix of technical and creative skills in video and photography which include traditional craft based skills and new digital technologies. Students also learn how these skills are applied in the workplace and this creative exchange is a core feature of the programme. This programme responds to the huge demand for moving and still images in contemporary life.
On completion of this programme students may proceed onto BA (Hons) qualifications in Commercial Video and Photography, Video Production or Commercial Photography, or seek employment in the video and photographic sector of the UK.
This programme is designed to give students skills relating to screen and lens based communication. On completion of this award students can progress onto a third year honours degree or seek employment in a chosen field related to New Media.
On completion of this programme students may proceed to BA (Hons) qualifications in a related subject or take their skills to a wide variety of employers in the video sectors of the UK and beyond.
Degrees
Katapult, a media company established by Photography and Film graduates, won the East Midlands Young Entrepreneurs of the Year 2002 and Kelly Atkins from 3D Design won again in 2003 with her company Carpet Burns.

Another new initiative....the Apple Centre - University of Derby was officially opened on Monday December 5 2006. This suite is equipped with the latest Final Cut Pro and Motion software on high-spec dual-processor G5 PowerMacs. The Macs are connected to 23” cinema screens to allow true HD editing and a sizeable working area. Courses in Final Cut Pro and media post-production will be made available to creative industry professionals and other media producers for the first time in the Midlands.
Training will be given by Steve Watson, an authorised Apple Trainer and a film maker in his own right.

This course is designed for those who want to learn to edit professional quality video using Final Cut Po 5.
This two day course provides a comprehensive overview of Motion 2, Apple’s real-time design motion graphics application.
This three day hands on course will familiarise students with Motion 2. It is designed both for those entering the motion graphics field and those migrating from other motion graphic design software packages.
Also available is Apple Training for Teachers, Apple i-Life for teachers and Bespoke Training.

The new cutting-edge BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming degree was launched in September 2005 within the School. This programme was developed by the University of Derby in partnership with Microsoft in order to provide the games industry with the skilled graduates they need. The new £150,000 Games Development Suite features the latest console, software and graphics equipment.
