Upcoming events

First Light Movieshas funding available to young people to make a five minute film. Get your hands on up to £5,000 to make a five minute film (Pilot Award) or up to £3,000 to develop a story idea and write a script (What's the big Idea? Award).

Berlinale Talent Campus, part of the 59th Berlin International Film Festival, is now open for applications from emerging filmmaking talent from around the world.

The campus will take place 7 – 12 February 2009 and is an amazing opportunity for professional networking and includes a combination of practical learning as well as masterclasses with some of the biggest names in the business.

Sounds Film Festival17 - 19 October is Glasgow's first dedicated film festival of music celebrating the city's collective love of film, cinema and music. This reputation has recently seen Glasgow named as a United Nations City of Music.

Cinemagic International Film Festival for Young Peoplehas launched its annual Young Filmmaker Competition for 2008. The judges are looking for imaginative and original short films made by young people to be showcased as part of the Festival which takes place in Belfast from 13 to 30 November.

The Cinemagic Young Filmmaker Competition is free to enter and it is open to young people from across the UK and Ireland aged between 4 and 25.

MEDIA - Funding call: Promotion/Access to Markets 19/2008
Deadline: 21 November 2008 for activities taking place between 1 June 2009 and 31 December 2009.

This scheme is designed to help professionals:

  • gain access to trade events and audiovisual markets inside Europe
  • encourage and support the set up of European catalogues and databases 
  • encourage promotion from pre-production or production phase
  • support networking and co-ordination of European common actions.

This is an opportunity to apply for a one-year contract, or for already established projects, a three-year framework partnership agreement with the Commission.


MEDIA - Funding call: Television Broadcasting 20/2008

Deadlines:  14 November 2008, 27 February 2009 and 26 June 2009.

This funding scheme is for independent European TV production companies only. It is designed to encourage independents to produce television programmes involving participation of at least three broadcasters from several member states.

Productions belonging to the following categories are eligible:

  • Television fiction films (one-off or series) of a total duration of 50 minutes minimum
  • Creative documentaries (one-off or series) of a total duration of 25 minutes minimum
  • Animation (one-off or series) of a total duration of 24 minutes minimum

Is the audience ever wrong? Who cares? Empirical research into film audiences is a small but developing field and this conference continues its aim of providing a space where those involved or interested in this area can come together to share research findings and discuss future ideas. Whilst the conference will appeal primarily to academics it is not confined to them.

Edinburgh International Film Festival 18–29 June 2008
This year's festival was a great success with the festival establishing itself as a stand–alone event over 12 days. No fighting for recognition amongst all the other festivals taking place in the capital in August.

Skillset was, once again, excited to sponsor the New Director Award which this year went to Marianna Palka for Good Dick. Check out the EIFF website for information of EIFF 2008.

BIPP Scotland

promotes Gaelic language, culture and arts development. They are involved in a variety of projects throught Scotland and the rest of Europe.

Glasgow Media Access Centre
hosts Cafe Flicker on the first Wednesday of every month at 7pm. This is an informal networking event giving filmmakers the chance to screen and discuss their films with other filmmakers.
