Further and Higher Education
The West Midlands has a variety of media businesses operating in the region including interactive media and games, film and tv, and strong broadcast and commercial radio activity. Corporate communications are also present in the audiovisual activity of the region. In order to meet the developing skills needs of the sector, Skillset is working with education providers to ensure that essential learning and skills opportunities are available. One of Skillset's core functions is to ensure that appropriate courses offered by Universities and Colleges meet the needs of industry. We aim to achieve this by finding out what employer and learner skills needs are and by using this information to inform the improvement of existing and the development of new learning programmes and qualifications.
In 2005, the Midlands team set up an Education Focus Group to continue to develop and improve links between audiovisual companies and learning providers in the region. For more information on this group, please click here. Within the field of Further Education we are continuing to develop links with colleges that provide courses for young people aged 16 and above, adults and professionals seeking specialist provision. We have recently completed research into industry engagement with FE providers in the West Midlands. To view a copy of the findings, click here: ![]()
WM Industry Engagement in FE
In relation to Higher Education we work with Universities and Specialist Colleges which offer HND, Degree and Postgraduate courses aimed at higher level skills development.
Education providers in the region are also engaging with the media industry, some with specific support from Skillset, to develop new two-year foundation degrees aimed at meeting industry needs. For a more in-depth exploration of the wide range of courses and programmes offered in the West Midlands, use the links on this page to investigate what is offered at each institution: Please note that the inclusion of a course/college in this listing does not constitute a recommendation.
