BCU has developed an excellent reputation for providing quality teaching, at modern facilities, to almost 25,000 students.Relevant faculties offering courses relating to the creative media sector are the tic and Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD).

TICA national centre of excellence and a key component of the University, tic combines technology–based learning with practical and business based solutions for individuals and organisations. It is located in Millenium Point, a £114 million complex adjacent to Birmingham City Centre.

Tic meets the needs of students seeking both higher education and professional development relevant to a rapidly developing technology–based society. Whilst interactive, screen and sound media is a key area it is also prominent in the increasingly convergent technologies of design, information and communications.

Tic 's Business Solutions teams offer affordable, wide–ranging training and development, to help businesses of every size and type. It helps them adopt new technologies in broadcasting, film, video, interactive media and photo–imaging etc.

Fuelled by the convergence of information and communications technologies, multi–channel digital broadcasting, creative and interactive media are amongst the fastest growing industries. Demand for informative entertainment and educational content in all sectors is growing. Tic's undergraduate, postgraduate and shorter professional development course modules are meeting the growing demand for multimedia, sound, music, film and television professionals able to combine technical knowledge with creative flair and commercial awareness.

Tic has recently added a new sound and television studio complex to its already extensive, affordable, technical resources. These are accessible to local film, video, sound, multimedia and computer games production companies. The tic offers a Creative Network monthly event, where potential buyers are able to meet to assess the work and capabilities of the West Midlands' growing creative media pool–talent.

Several tic–managed government initiatives have advanced the skills, resources, jobs and income of West Midlands screen–based, media and content production businesses. Tic's training programmes have raised the technical and business skills of the Region's media sector, helped nurture embryo businesses and generate jobs.

  • The tic's range of Short Courses, are designed to extend and develop on previous education and experience. These courses are subject to availability but include: advanced practical production techniques across the disciplines of film & video, music and audio recording through to interactive and muitimedia applications.     Birmingham Institute of Art and Design (BIAD) is one of the foremost centres for art, design and media education in the country. Graduates have an excellent record of achievement and courses are underpinned by strong industry links and an impressive research and development programme.

    BIAD works closely with industry and offers training and many other services through the Jewellery Industry Innovation Centre (JIIC), Screen Media Lab, Centre for High Value Added Products (CHVAP) and Open Advantage. Contact details can be obtained through our email address @biadbusiness.com

    BIAD has developed partnership arrangements with a number of local and regional colleges. There is a range of courses in the colleges, several of which have a flexible part–time mode. Students who successfully graduate from a course at a partnership college may progress to appropriate further study at BIAD.

    BIAD offers a highly respected BTEC Diploma in Foundation Studies in Art and Design (delivered at Bournville Centre for Visual Arts) and three BTEC National Diplomas (delivered at Gosta Green and in the School of Jewellery). A student gaining a pass on one of these courses can progress directly to an appropriate undergraduate course within the Faculty.

    BIAD also offers a comprehensive range of art, architecture, design and media undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Gosta Green, Bournville Centre for Visual Arts, School of Jewellery, School of Art and at Perry Barr. The following are relevant undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

    Department of Visual Communication

    The department offers a range of courses in visual communication. Past graduates have an excellent record of achievement.

    BA (Hons) Visual Communication Students enrol on the course as Visual Communication students and study a series of common and specialist modules that build towards the following awards:

    Visual Communication

    The department also offers MA Visual Communication. Awards are as follows:

    Department of Media and Communications
    Birmingham city University was one of the first universities in the country to teach media, and the undergraduate media courses are consistently in the top twenty of the guardian league table. The Media and Communication department has some of the best production facilities in the country, and state of the art on–line music production labs.

    Undergraduate degree courses provide a balance between production, media theory and professional studies, giving students the opportunity to produce radio and TV shows, websites, CDROMS, newspapers and magazines, photographs, music events, PR campaigns, work in media organisations, and learn about the place of media in our society. There are eight degrees to choose from, with each degree offering specialists the opportunity to build skills in related areas, as well as working with students in related media, replicating professional experience and building teamwork skills.

  • The department boasts an excellent employability record and its Professional Studies modules are used as an example of best Practice by other media departments. Graduates of the course work in a number of jobs across the media – from journalists, editors, camera operators and presenters, to PR account managers, fashion photographers and web designers.
