The University of Wolverhampton gained its university status in 1992, and since then has continued to grow. The Schools within the university are supported by the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching and Graduate School.

The university has business links across the region, with courses, technology transfer, student and graduate placements and consultancy for the public. The Competitiveness Centre at the University offers one central contact point for all of the University's services to external organisations, including the public and private sectors.

Visual Communication or Graphic Design

Facilities within the School of Art and Design include a new Digital Media Centre (part of a £5 million art and design refurbishment) with state-of-the-art technology that's as good as any in UK Higher Education.

The University's yearly BA Degree Show is open to the public, and is arguably the biggest annual visual arts event in the city.

Student Reena Kalsi recently won a place on Channel 4's prestigious Animator-in-Residence scheme at the national Museum of Film, Photography and Television.

  • This programme concentrates on visual impact rather than programming and system design.

  • This programme includes significant amounts of system design and software authoring and offers a four year sandwich course in which students spend their entire third year working in a relevant commercial context.

Media, Communications and Cultural Studies

Students at the University of WolverhamptonThe brand new, state-of-the-art IT Futures Building will house non-linear video and audio editing facilities, a TV and radio station as well as networked individual digital editing facilities running Avid Express DV and equipment used by professionals. Placement opportunities with local media centres means students get hands-on work experience.

  • FD (Arts) Broadcast Journalism

  • This Foundation Degree is offered in collaboration with City of Wolverhampton College
  • BA (Hons) Media and Communication Studies
  • BA (Hons) Media and Cultural Studies Music
  • BA (Hons) Music Technology and Popular Music/Music

  • This new course focuses on the creative use of music technology and is a joint course with the existing BA(hons) Popular Music. The music department has two digital studios and two state of the art music technology labs as well as a host of other music facilities. Unlike some degrees of this nature candidates need to be able to read music to a basic level in order to gain entry onto the course. If you have no music theory exams, you can take a test, a sample of which can be viewed online at www.wlv.ac.uk/sspal/music.   • This course provides a framework within which students design an individual programme. Typical modules include: Animation, Design for Multimedia, Digital Media, Graphic Communication, Illustration, Multimedia Communication, Photography and Video amongst others.
