The Sixth Form College Solihull
The Sixth Form College Solihull has an excellent record of examination success and offers a wide range of courses all directed at the needs of young people between the ages of 16 and 19.
Relevant full-time courses currently offered are:
- AS Media Studies (OCR) 40% of this is coursework, based on Print Production
- A2 Media Studies (OCR) 40% of this is coursework, based on Television Production
- OCR Level 3 National Diploma in Media - 12 units (equivalent of two full a Levels)
- OCR Level 2 National Certificate in Media - 6 units (equivalent of 5 grade c passes at GCSE)
Both of these courses are portfolio based (no examination units). Nationals are part of the National Qualifications Framework and they are recognised by universities and employers. Students seeking employment in the media would normally go on to take a degree in a media related area or further training.
The department has approximately 320 A level and 110 vocational students. They are well resourced, with 2 audio visual suites containing 20 PCs running Adobe Premiere Pro and Audition, and 3 Print/Graphics areas housing approximately 60 PCs running software such as Adobe Photoshop, Quark Express, and Dreamweaver.
Industry links are important and over the past few years the College has worked closely with a number of providers.
Relevant part-time course in computer animation:
- OCN 3D Computer Animation (Level 3)
This course is based around the 3ds max animation software, which is used extensively in the effects and games industries. Students are required to work with the software on a lesson-by-lesson basis, following detailed practical exercises and assignments. They are also required to write several essays, evaluating various tools and techniques used in 3D animation.
