Y&H: Pilot Dip SSA Article
A new Pilot Diploma in Broadcast Media will give students in the region the opportunity to develop skills that will make them stand out from the crowd in the competitive broadcasting jobs market.
Skillset has been working closely with Yorkshire Forward and East Coast Media (Grimsby Institute) to deliver the new diploma. Consultation with regional industry employers will ensure that the curriculum will benefit both the student and future employers. As such, Skillset has developed relationships with PA News (Howden), Propeller and BBC Yorkshire and Lincolnshire for student placements.
The pilot diploma will offer 40 learners a full-time or part-time modular programme split between the following placements:
- Broadcast News at Channel 7 – also undertaking placements at the BBC in Hull;
- Business and Educational Programming at Hull Interactive TV;
- Weekly News magazine programme at the Press Association for Propeller;
- A four week intensive video journalism conversion course for print journalists at the Press Asssociation.
Learners will have their competence rigorously assessed via a modular programme which will allow flexibility over: the disciplines chosen; the length and extent of study; the media platforms for which work is produced; and the genres and programming types covered.
East Coast Media will deliver the pilot qualification, building on the strength of its reputation in helping students achieve excellent results in NVQs level 3 and 4 in Broadcast Journalism and Camera & Edit. This will provide an excellent opportunity for East Coast Media to test a new model for developing a qualification that reflects current industry demand in terms of technological skills, the flexibility of the learning packages and the scope to expand the broadcast opportunity from local community output to the national level.
East Coast Media will work with Skillset's regional team and with its national Standards and Qualifications team to contribute to discussions and developments with exam bodies.
