Y&H: York University

The Department of Theatre, Film and Television is an exciting new development at York . Its founding staff are drawn from existing strengths in English, Electronics and Sociology where theatre, film and television courses have previously been taught. Building on this experience, the department aims to combine features normally found in separate disciplinary areas.  They utilise both arts and science perspectives; develop in students the application of creative techniques in theatre, film and television; and offer a unique blend of comparative, historical and theoretical studies, original research and innovative practice in the artistic, creative and technical aspects of stage and screen.

From October 2007 the department will be offering three one year Masters courses.

MA in Cinema, Television and Society

This MA addresses topics of contemporary concern about the role of cinema and television in modern society. It draws on the various traditions of film and television studies, sociologically informed media research, and cultural studies to provide students with both the knowledge and the techniques necessary to understand and research into film and television from an inter-disciplinary perspective. Regular screenings and discussion of specific film and TV material are integral to the course.

MA in Theatre: Writing, Directing and Performance

This MA offers a distinctive exploration of analytical and practical methods for the creative investigation and interpretation of play-texts. The main emphasis of the MA is on the interpretation of text through the consideration of acting and directing processes, production conditions, historical context, and institutional and cultural politics. Masterclasses by visiting professionals are an important part of the programme. Students can opt for an extended research project by dissertation or by practical project such as a production, performance, or piece of writing.

MA/MSc in Postproduction with Specialisation in Visual Effects or Sound Design

This MA/MSc covers key areas of digital film and television postproduction, exploring the relationship between image and sound. It is designed both for students seeking careers in postproduction industries - specialising in editing, visual effects or sound design - and those wishing to pursue research into audio or visual postproduction systems. Through extensive hands-on practice and in-depth theoretical study, students will develop a well-rounded knowledge of the creative process, industry-standard techniques and the power of modern digital postproduction technology within the wider context of film and television production.

From October 2008 they will be offering a BA in Writing, Directing and Performance, and from October 2009 a BSc in Film and Television Production and Technologies.
