
Y&H: Harrogate College
The BTEC Higher National in Photography and Digital Imaging is an exploration into key areas of photographic and sequential practice. The course promotes professionalism through creative and technical underpinning as well as awakening a contextual understanding of photographic and design practices.
Harrogate College has embraced the digital applications within this subject area and promote the use of new technologies (digital/video) alongside the traditional photographic applications. Students willwork within studio, darkroom, location and digital environments - this equipping them to the highest standard ready for the transition into their chosen profession. With continual updating the course is re-assessed on a regular basistaking into account the views of staff, students and the industry itself.
To keep intouch with contemporary issues a series of visiting professionals is arranged along with a number of live briefs, a foreign visit and various trips to galleries and sites of interest. Coursework consists of a series of projects designed to train and test the students. Workshops run alongside the projects, with tutorials that allow the student the opportunity to express personal ideas and discuss specific issues.

The HND, HNC and BA (Hons) Photography are designed to promote individual working practices. After inital briefing and workshop sessions the students are encouraged to manage their time and direct themselves. Like all higher courses the emphasis is on self-motivated learning with tutor input and guidnace along with first class technical suppot.
Professional work placements have included The Guardian (photojournalism), Advertising Agencies in London and Leeds, fashion and music. Staff are both professionals and/or active researchers.
