Northern Routes Successes
Competition was fierce for the Northern Routes Training Scheme, with almost 500 applications received for just 22 places.
Now all of the trainees have finished their 12 weeks placements, with award winning television programme makers across the North of England. Shameless, Panorama, Spooks Code 9, Clash of the Santas, The Cup and BBC News, were just some of the fabulous productions that the successful candidates did their ‘on the job' training, gaining invaluable hands on experience.
Carolyn Nicoll, Northern Routes Project Manager, says:
"The Northern Routes trainees have been given amazing opportunities with experienced crews on fantastic productions, as well as bespoke training tailored to their individual needs, to help them progress in their chosen careers. Following the Northern Routes scheme trainees have gone on to some great TV and feature film projects, including working on primetime productions such as Waterloo Road, Wired, The Royal, Survivors, Shameless and Wuthering Heights. I am delighted that Northern Routes has been such a success and has given trainees the experience and contacts to work in the industry."
Malcolm Wright, ITV goes on to say:
"Northern Routes is an excellent gateway scheme for new talent coming into the media industries. ITV is delighted to support it. The scheme is very well organised and the placements are definitely beneficial to us as well as the participants."

Since my placement I have changed my direction slightly in that I want to train as a Grip now, rather than stay with Cameras. The people I met on my placement on the scheme helped direct me and I thank them for that

Philip Dehany - Production Assistant Trainee @ Film Nova
A unique and valuable insight into film and television making in the North.
Ross Collier - Sound Trainee on BBC Drama Spooks Code 9
I got to work with a full professional crew on a production that will actually be broadcast. So you're learning skills from people who are out there doing this for a living. A great way to learn!
Sarah Fenton - Production Assistant Trainee on BBC Drama Spooks Code 9
Northern Routes has provided me with the opportunity to get a foot in the door as well as on-the-job training in an area increasingly difficult for new comers to break into. It has been hard work and tiring at times, but a truly rewarding experience.
Andrew Thorp - Researcher Trainee @ Media 19
A challenging experience that gives you the belief and skills to really set you up for your future.
Ros Gildea - Script Supervisor Trainee on ITV drama ‘Boy Meets Girl'
This traineeship has given me a specific role that has made me employable whilst I learn about the industry. In the near future I plan to build on my knowledge to become a Script Supervisor.
Chris Devlin - Sound Trainee on BBC Drama ‘The Cup' and ‘North West Tonight'
A great opportunity to work in the industry with support and guidance.
